Cheran has a Reason to Smile
Cheran, director of nine award winning movies (4 National and 5 Filmfare), has just returned from Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) shares, "It's a different world out there - one that goes beyond the viability factor of a film. A rewarding week it was!" Although his film 'Pokkisham' fails to impress at the box office, the movie is making quite a mark in many film festivals.
After the MIFF world cinema meet, Cheran has now jumped to Kerala where the International film fest opens today. Despite having a poor show at box office, 'Pokkisham' was screened at MIFF's World Classics section. The movie was showered with accolades. Out of the 11 movies chosen for the tribute, 'Pokkisham' was the only Tamil film. "Shyam Benegal was part of the selection committee," he quotes with pride.
The mindset of our directors ought to change - most of the time the focus is on violence. Cinema as an art has been relegated to the background. It is business, nothing more," he adds."With an investment of just about Rs.1 crore small countries come up with such excellent films. Here, you need a minimum of 2 crores, that is, if you don't go in for big heroes." His protest is that people haven't been educated to view movie as an art. "Projecting the hero as a superman considered the safest track." When asked why his movie 'Pokkisham' not entered the competition section? The films of first time filmmakers are preferred here - but movies 10 years old can also feature under the classic category, he answers.
Recently, Cheran can be often spotted in the film festival circuit. He was a jury member for an Indian Premiere Section at the recent 40 International Film Festival in Goa. The main criterion for the selection is that the film should not have been released for public viewing before the festival. Cheran was invited as a jury member two years ago, which he could not accept then. Cheran was the only Tamilian of the six members Jury.
'Pokkisham' will be screened on 14th of December in the Kerala International Film Festival under Competitor category. In this fest also, 'Pokkisham' is the only tamil film to be screened in International Film Festival. Cheran is unperturbed with its commercial debacle of his movie and also added a few feathers to his caps. He says that he has started working on his next project.
